This piece was the first major project I approached in my current Brooklyn studio space, after moving from Seattle in the midst of an unusual and stressful year. The tape loops that appear in the final third of the song were little overlapping sketches that I'd salvaged from an unfinished song a few months before, and provided the harmonic basis for the vocal and guitar loops that dominate the beginning and middle.. Often when I start in on an improvised loop piece I don't know what strain of my mental energy will emerge, and once the piece started to coalesce I couldn't escape the image of a hidden, mist-laden bend of the Sandy river outside Portland that I'd visited in July with some dear friends, just before leaving the Northwest. It was quiet, lush, chilly and perfect. We had beer and weed and cigarettes; we swam & chatted throughout an afternoon bookended by hikes through an old growth forest. I've dreamt about it several times since.
