about

THESIS DRIVE is a monthly subscription based project. A different ambient musician is invited to create a long form composition to be released/uploaded to the Bandcamp album every month- for a year.

Subscribers receive a physical drive containing all the music from the previous DRIVE releases as well as the upcoming monthly releases. DRIVES are handmade by artist Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Lubomyr Melnyk).

This release is the result of the first 5 months of the project's second year.

My contribution for DRIVE is titled 'Roam'. Although it was written and recorded before we were asked to go into lockdown, there is now a certain irony in the meaning behind it. The DRIVE pieces are long-form recordings of music to accompany journeying - something I love and am missing hugely at the moment. I love going on long drives, taking the train to a new place or walking somewhere down the "wrong street" - exploring, getting lost, finding something different or somewhere interesting. Or, indeed, returning to somewhere familiar - a place of comfort, freedom, where you feel truly awake. Alive.

Being able to roam where we want (well, mostly...within the law) is such a gift and a special feeling. Of course, it's never been more apparent and relevant than now. I catch myself dreaming of the first trips I'll go on when we're allowed to. Making plans, making lists, musing over maps, mentally marking the places I haven't made it to yet. For now, though, the daydreaming is getting me through. This piece helps remind me that sometimes we head off into the unknown with some kind of idea or plan, adapting to what we find. Other times, we return to a familiar place, which feels like another version of home. Maybe even the home we hope to have.

One day, we'll roam again.
